Who is probably losing perspective there...? Of course, one should support a child, but sports in a club, just like music lessons... it doesn’t have to be expensive private lessons. And new tablets and so on, that can be done quite differently too. If your acquaintance insists on that, fine. But please don’t generalize that to everyone.

Not his, but apparently that of his children.

If children beg... something must have gone wrong in the past? If a child begs for expensive sneakers, then they haven’t understood the value of money.

Luckily, it’s up to everyone individually how they handle that in upbringing. I expect a bit more foresight from teachers :)

There are about 180 posts on this topic here. I really enjoyed the discussion and I have to suppress my reflex right now ;-)

The Federal Statistical Office puts this into numbers: children cost 6,000 euros per year until they are six years old. Between 6 and 12 years it is then 7,000 euros, and until adulthood about 8,500 euros per year. If you add it up, it comes to around 130,000 euros, per child, mind you.

That is on average 600 euros per month. Per child. Statistical average. With 800 euros, including reserves for university studies, it is not far off. In addition, there is loss of income. "The loss of income of the parents for raising one child is estimated at about 130,000 euros, for two children it is 175,000 euros, and for three children 230,000 euros. Other calculations come to similar results. Child benefit, if received for 25 years, amounts to 55,000 euros according to current figures. Other family policy benefits can also by far not compensate for the financial damage."

That the amounts are not to be seen as exorbitant is also shown by maintenance law: "In the case of parental separation, the Düsseldorf Table gives precise information about the child support entitlement. It ranges from 317 euros per month in the lowest income bracket and for children aged 0 to 5 years up to 781 euros per month for high earners and children aged 18 and over."

The Federal Statistical Office has calculated 700 euros per month for teenagers without precautionary, insurance, and care costs.

Spending your whole life in a rented apartment with the children when they are young in order to save for them so that they can afford a house once they are adults. No offense, but that is absurd. And you can still study in Germany without rich parents.

These statistics always include the housing and care costs in the 600€, 700€ or whatever amount. Here it is about the costs WITHOUT housing, because these are hidden in the annuity. Oh, and always first subtract the child benefit.

We are not doing that. We took our time looking and with a slightly higher income and one child, we bought a house last year – but not with such a loan payment. We don’t want to make the dream of owning a house come true at the expense of a relaxed life. We both experienced that with our parents. We also had to finance almost the entire studies ourselves since there was no Bafög for children of teachers. I don’t want to impose that on my child to that extent.
