Taxes were mentioned, and with a premium of that amount, I assumed an income above the threshold.

Had to smile, I agree with you. I think the OP is just at the beginning of the journey and wants to know roughly what he can afford, also compared to others. I'll give him a comparison: 2 full earners, about 7k net per month (+ commissions), we wouldn't really dare more than a 2k installment on a long-term basis, even with kids.

Since that would inversely mean that no one earning less than €6,000 net could build, I'll throw the bold hypothesis into the room that the cost of living is highly individual ;)
