I removed the carpet in some rooms of my house and installed laminate flooring. Now some of my wooden doors no longer close properly; they scrape against the now too high floor. I would need to shorten them a few millimeters at the bottom. What is the best way to do this? With an orbital sander or with an electric planer? I have never worked with a planer before; honestly, I can't imagine that it can easily shave off 1-2 millimeters from the solid wood without everything splintering and fraying. The doors are painted; do I have to expect that the paint will chip off at the cut edge? Maybe someone has a tip on the best way to do this. Thank you!

Doors are shortened with a planer, which is well suited for this purpose, unlike a sanding device, which, as the name suggests, is more suitable for sanding and not for material removal. If the doors have been professionally painted, no paint will chip off. However, you must note that the bottom of the door is then no longer protected against moisture (e.g., plaster water). It would be better if you repaint the cut edge after shortening.

The plane is already the right tool for this, but if you have never worked with it before, you should first practice on a large piece of scrap wood. Then you will get a feel for the proper handling; starting right away on the door could go wrong.

Be sure to practice on a no longer used piece. If I had done that before, I would have spared myself ridicule :(

I agree, first try it on another piece of wood. That way you get a feel for the plane. Do not set the plane so deep. Remove material little by little. That worked well for me.

We had to do it that way too, after our doors wouldn’t close anymore. But it works well with a plane. Then paint it nicely and it looks neat.
