If your wife becomes a civil servant of the state, she could be assigned in the middle of nowhere [jwd] in the federal state, I would wait until that is clarified.

Is it really as harsh as it is often portrayed in the forum?
I know several tenured teachers, and they all still live entirely in their (chosen) home area. None of them were forcibly transferred to the middle of nowhere. I know that theoretically it can happen, but is it really that common in practice? I only know examples where the place of employment is close to the place of residence. At least commutable.

In Berlin, definitely, after all, it is only one federal state with one city. If there is a need, the office does not care about a travel time of 1 or 2 hours. But it is not manageable with small children.

I know police officers, practically all in my district. There is regional distribution, but as a beginner it can happen that you find yourself in a different district than your desired one. That can sometimes mean a distance of 100 km. You basically have to fight for your chosen home region. However, many are also lucky… you can’t rely on that.

The other day, my child's teacher told me that he has already submitted 3 transfer applications and it has never worked out so far, despite being married and having 2 or 3 children. He drives a total of between 2.5 and 3 hours every day, depending on how early or long he has school and then hits the rush hour.

Okay, crazy. That seems to depend a lot on the region.
