Hello everyone, I would like to remove my old 5 cm EPS insulation, plastered and embedded on old "Hasen?" metal mesh, as a self-contribution (preparation for the facade renovation). Has anyone done something like this before? Which tools are best suited? Below is a brick wall, I find an angle grinder or rotary hammer too dangerous. Maybe an angle grinder with a steel/wire brush? Thanks and best regards

You can get that off. A wide sledgehammer and the stuff flies away. So the bonding mortar, etc. With a wire brush it takes a very long time. But that is not the problem at all.

Have you already thought about the disposal? EPS Styrofoam with residues is extremely expensive. It can basically only be burned in a plant. Of course, very harmful to health.

You occasionally read about 6000 euros disposal cost per ton. Because disposing everything in the Yellow Bin will not work. With a house like this, a lot adds up. And separating the reinforcement plaster from the Styrofoam residue-free, I consider impossible.

So very problematic. The disposal of drywall also costs twice as much as the new price in the hardware store. Although it is completely harmless biologically.

Thank you for the hints. Please let's tick off the EPS disposal discussion, I have an official, affordable solution for this, the stuff is picked up from me in big packs. I am a bit concerned about the brick wall underneath, it must not be damaged, the facade has to be mounted on it - VHF with wooden battens. For SDS I found the typical flat chisels that are used (I also use them) to remove tiles or plaster from concrete. Won't the bricks break even if I work with the small 3 kg Bosch hammer? What do you think about something like this - putty chisel or is it nonsense?

We destroyed the plaster longitudinally in about 1m width with a plasterer's axe and then stripped it off from above. This resulted in very little EPS adhering, which then went in as mixed construction waste. Afterwards, using a kind of spatula on a long handle (can probably be found under "Stoßscharre"), we "scraped off" the panels one by one from the side. This even worked well through the plastic anchors.

Better check again with the responsible construction or environmental department on how to secure the construction site against flying Styropur. In our street, a contractor simply had the old insulation removed without securing the construction site. The whole neighborhood looked like a snow globe and it apparently got very expensive for the company.

Thank you very much. I was not familiar with these tools before - plasterer’s hatchet and pounding chisel, will report with photo. One additional question. What should I do with the "bare" brick walls. I will only remove small sections where necessary, for example above the porch, which will be cut away (replaced). Can brick be painted with acrylic latex paint (should be vapor permeable but water-repellent), it needs to stand for about 2-3 months, a piece above the porch is maybe 2 m2 in size but on the rain side. Covering with foil or bitumen panels is a bit awkward, they will blow away.
