I watched it again from a different angle, Buchsbaum might be right. The other explanation would be too extreme. Maybe the image creator will simply enlighten us ;)

The ridge in the picture is at the bottom because the picture is rotated.

If the overlap were actually wrong, the house would have long since flooded.

So the overlap is definitely correct and can be ruled out as the cause. Why would water suddenly penetrate there?

Apparently a roofer was there (whatever he did?) and since then it has been leaking. At least that's the title of the thread. You can also see some scratches on the sheets that are not covered with dirt. So they are relatively fresh. I wouldn't completely rule out that the roofer botched the job here. I would remove a few sheets and check where you can find water traces underneath. Under the overlaps, under the screws, etc.

The only thing we can say for sure here is, water does not flow uphill.

Hello everyone,

yes, the overlap of course goes downward. So the upper sheet overlaps the lower one and the water should flow down to the lower one. According to gravity.

But when we applied some force on the two sheets, some water always flowed out. We practically squeezed it out. Now we have applied the bitumen putty over it so that, somehow, nothing can flow in there. Yes, you can call us bunglers now, but we didn’t know a better solution for the time being. Hopefully it doesn’t accumulate too much at those spots... but there actually aren’t any entry points anymore.

And the scratches are from us. We wanted it to be as free of dirt as possible before it gets painted over.

We are also considering completely painting over the probably 200 screws once. They are probably already 10-15 years old. It could really be that they are causing the problem.

And there were already problems with the water before, but not as bad as last time. Maybe it was just an extreme thunderstorm.

The fact is, there was water between the sheets. For whatever reason... even though it should actually flow from one sheet to the other.

Thanks definitely for your contributions! That always helps.

Unscrew the screws and screw them back in with a new gasket? The screw gasket was already mentioned in post #5 as a possible water entry point.

There aren't that many possibilities with a sheet metal roof. Work through systematically.
