Hello,

I will soon start renovating a house. Of course, everything step by step.
Since I am reluctant to change the doors because of the plastering, etc., the following question:

Is the door in this photo (about 6 in the house) paintable with primer + 2-3 times sanding? I would like to paint it white.

Thank you all

Yes, if you sand, you don’t need [Anlauger] as far as I know. I have always managed my last painting activities without sanding. For one thing, I believe it was plastic boards on a balcony, I needed extra primer. I would ask again what it is for and possibly use it in one workflow before painting. Because it might be handled like a priming coat. I would treat the doors and frames with a foam roller. For the many corners, prime with a small brush and rework with a small roller. Remember the rubber lips - if you want to do it properly, replace them after painting :) If you sand, you could also glaze - then the grain remains visible.

Does the door even have real grain patterns? It looks like the first layer is just a glued-on "foil," similar to a kitchen surface. You could check by looking more closely at the corners at the bottom or top. Sometimes you can see there that it’s not real wood at all. So I’m not sure if sanding it down would really do any good.

When changing the door, you don’t necessarily have to replace the frames. They are relatively neutral in color and might not be bad with a white door. All white is somehow not quite right either, or am I mistaken?

Couldn’t you just wrap such a door, like you wrap a car?

The door shown seems to be veneered. Actually, it wouldn't be much effort to replace the door(s). If the decorative trim is not glued in, the frame can even be removed without damage, without harming the plaster. I would advise against foil covering; that fails at the rebate and the corners at the latest. If painting white, then both the frames and the door leaf. First, remove all fittings as far as possible (including the lock), then carefully clean off dirt and grease with a gentle cleaner and sand the old paint with sandpaper (grit 180). After that, clean again (dust-free) and fill any defects if necessary. If needed, sand again and make dust-free once more. Prime and then apply the top coat. What I would also do is change the handle set, but that's a matter of taste. As you can see, there is a lot of work ahead of you.

Aren't there always those types from Portas in supermarkets? Have you ever asked there how much such a refurbishment costs? I could imagine that it looks higher quality than just painting over, even if it might cost a few € more.

Thanks, yes I think the door is veneered! That's how it seemed to me during both viewings so far. I will definitely try painting it. So you advise against using paint stripper and suggest sanding directly?

I will definitely change the handle set, yes!
