In the other thread, I mostly wrote about the financial situation. Which plot of land and where is, in my opinion, another different topic. So here is some background:

My wife and I are both from Frankfurt; I grew up even more urban than she did. I have been wanting to get away for at least 6 years, I want my peace and privacy – with her, this has been the case since our daughter was born. We currently live in downtown Frankfurt renting, but a few years ago we lived quite rurally in Karben. Our space requirements have increased to 5 rooms now (at least prospectively) due to constant home office on my part and our child. We both don’t like old buildings and place value on a certain level of comfort. I am quite handy and keep tinkering with various things in our apartments. That always seemed wasted since we eventually moved anyway. I also miss having a garden where I can plant some tomatoes and fire up the smoker/grill.
As for the area we want to live in, I can say this much: only a small part of our family really keeps us in Frankfurt, which is why we do not want to move too far out – Frankfurt should still be reachable within a maximum of 1 hour by car. The place we move to should not have a dead center; alternatively, good transport connections to a lively place balance that out. For example: when we lived in Karben (there’s basically no town center there, nowhere nice to have a coffee), Bad Vilbel with its bars and cafes was only 2 S-Bahn stations away. Additionally, my wife is very reluctant to drive, so good public transit connections should exist (I partially exclude buses because if they only run every 30 minutes, are unreliable, stop at every farm, and run only until 9 pm, that’s not much use to us...). Ultimately, some metropolitan region should be reachable. Like Frankfurt from Karben, Mannheim from Weinheim, etc.

That’s all I can think of right now; if you have any questions, just ask :)
