The idea of preserving this window already shows respect for what exists. I do not know the conditions for the demolition and it is not my place to judge them. From the perspective of resource conservation, what we do in the construction sector is objectively madness. I myself am a bad example in this regard. We have performed the cognitively dissonant feat of building a super energy-efficient single-family house and, objectively speaking, used an absurd amount of resources per square meter of created living space.

Good evening,

thank you for the constructive responses regarding the window removal. I was also advised to test the putty for asbestos, which I will definitely do before the removal.
We will no longer use it as an exterior window, but rather as a room connector or in the garden house, as suggested above.

If you find asbestos in your house, you are obligated to dispose of it properly. That costs a lot of money. Disposing of asbestos knowingly and improperly is really expensive. Asbestos was used in window putty until the late 80s. The fibers are bound in the putty and therefore harmless. Of course, such putty hardens over the years – but as long as you don’t sand or grind it, there is no health risk from handling it. Remove it as you planned. I definitely wouldn’t have it tested.

Not really. Most recycling centers should accept it for a relatively small fee. For example, it costs only €7.61 per 100kg with us or a flat rate of €48 for, say, 2 cubic meters. The proper and safe handling of removing it from the house, especially for you as a DIYer, is the actual problem – but it is also manageable.

That is good to know. I am currently helping to renovate a horse farm. There is a problematic roof of a riding hall. €48 for 2 cubic meters would be a dream. I think that if one window has this putty, the others do too. Removing and disposing of the material costs not only money but also a lot of time.

I understood the reference to the price more explicitly meant to the improper disposal (fine) rather than the regular rate if done correctly.
