Hello dear forum,

I have been pondering our ventilation system for weeks. First because of the pipe routing (decision not yet final), now because of the position of the device itself. This should be decided by tomorrow, as we are supposed to sign the construction plan and then the wooden house production will slowly begin.

It was always clear that the device would be in the utility room. Until a few days ago I realized that the outlets would end up directly in the roof of the carport adjacent to the house wall, which is located lower down. We can’t really position the outlets any lower since there are other devices and connections there—the room isn’t huge—and there is no basement. Also, I see the problem that the air just beneath the carport is not exactly ideal either. Especially in summer, when the heat under the slightly sloped roof rises towards the house wall—directly into the outdoor air duct.
What do you think? Would you extract the outside air from under the carport?

So I considered placing the system in the attic. Immediately my family objected: “You don’t want to crawl up there every two weeks to change and clean the filter, do you?” Every two weeks is probably exaggerated. But no, I honestly don’t really want to crawl up there for maintenance. By the way, there is 1.90m of clear height under the ridge.
Even more worrying to me is that vibrations might transfer into the ceiling or wall and cause humming in the bedroom at night. Although the system would be above the bathroom, who knows...
Does anyone have experience with systems in the attic? Possibly even in a wooden house where the walls aren’t solid? Do you hear anything?

So third option: placement in the utility and storage room. Very accessible, plenty of space, also for pipes going outside. Until I read in a planning guide that openings should not be placed too close to neighbors or one’s own terrace because of noise. The exhaust air would of course blow directly onto the neighbor’s bedroom window only 6 meters away [emoji16]

Now I’m completely stuck [emoji30]
Yes, we have a planner. But he can only give advice. We have to decide.

You can’t make the decision for us either. But maybe you have experiences or opinions regarding the concerns mentioned?
What is the lesser or least likely evil?
- disturbing neighbors with noise
- risk of a humming wooden ceiling?
- drawing in the air trapped under the carport roof?

Many greetings

You can also extend the pipe insulated to the outside under the carport. We are also extending the controlled residential ventilation from the "enclosed" utility room through the garage to the outside:

Thank you for your advice. I had thought about that as well. Extending along the wall is less feasible for us, but theoretically, one could go through the roof using the exhaust pipe for roof installation. It’s just not really a looker – with you, if I understand correctly, it’s less of a concern because of the garage.

I know that several people here in the forum with their own system very much preferred to choose the position in the attic because it is advantageous for several reasons (which I do not know now). However, it would be important that neither the system nor the outgoing pipes are located in a condensation zone. I believe the magic temperature was somewhere between 10° and 15°? (not quite sure). This would then be relevant in your case if your attic or carport is not insulated/heated.
