If the distance were not sufficient, you wouldn’t be able to live in the Ruhr metropolitan area, for example. I find it very relaxed both regarding the "noise" – it’s just a rustling, not even noticeable inside the house – and the "air pollution".

I wouldn't be thrilled about that either, but I think it depends. How much can you actually hear, are you in the usual wind direction, any rock walls reflecting the sound? And of course the question is also what the alternatives are.

My wife lived for years 300m from the A6. When I visited her, the noise from the highway was always immediately noticeable. And unfortunately, it wasn’t a monotonous highway noise, but you could distinguish every truck, every motorcycle, and also every high-powered car. It may be that you get used to it over time, but you also eventually get used to pain, yet it still exists. Additionally, there are possible ruts and the like. I wouldn’t want to build near the highway. In one thing I agree with the previous speakers: near a heavily trafficked main road, it is even worse.

Yes, even currently.
It is one of the main reasons to build.
