During an apartment clearance, a very nice & sturdy Ikea shelving system Journalist fell into my hands. The style reminds me of the 1970s. The system is quite flexible & expandable. The Journalist can be used anywhere. Living room, bedroom, hallway, kitchen, office/study ...
At 1-2-3 I also shot myself a Journalist addition. 5 m at 92 cm height, with 5 cabinets, along with 5 shelves for 40€ ... (Sad the loss of value) So I had enough building material ...
Originally, the shelf/cabinet variation is somewhat limited. It can only be combined as shelf/cabinet or vice versa.
Since I wanted cabinet/cabinet, I repurposed a top cover plate as a middle plate.
Cabinet/cabinet combination
With the help of one or two combination angles, the dimensions for the drilling & the groove (rear panel slot B) are transferred.
To mark better, it is advisable to use painter’s tape as a marking aid.
Even if a wood drill has a centering tip, I punch with a center punch.
For the pin slot (A) a 5 mm hole is drilled. The receiving groove (B) can be made with a router or a circular saw.
The pins have to be shortened by 3/4 mm. Works well with the angle grinder & pliers.
The hinge mounts on the upper cabinet must be pushed all the way up & the hinges of the lower cabinet pushed down. (Here two different hinges, glass door on top, wooden door below.)
And this is how it looks then ...
Fits, wobbles & has clearance ...
