No, for many reasons. But if it has to be one, then a masonry stove with low output.

A decorative fireplace makes sense if you enjoy it.
A fireplace for heating is not practical.

Ok, I'll explain it better: It's about the difference between being able to heat the house with the thing (doesn't make sense) versus a bit of warmth for a cozy evening in the living room... the latter is something you have to like. There are plenty of people who currently don't like a TV evening, idleness or similar, so what use is a fireplace then (in terms of meaningfulness)?
