Omit basement windows in ventilated basements?

Living space without an escape route is negligent. And sleeping in a room that has no window, isn’t that also somewhat "creepy"? Who is supposed to stand in front of the window there? On the ground floor, you also have windows...

Burglars are unobserved there.

Our concern is that the general contractor says he cannot build a light well but only a normal facade window with excavation. And that is, all in all, an expensive affair. The building consultant disagrees and says a normal small basement window without excavation is possible and can be obtained for no more than €2,500 for two basement rooms. I will try again to have this solution implemented.

Hello everyone,

may I ask how you ultimately decided or whether you are satisfied with your decision?

We are facing a similar problem:
4 basement rooms (utility room, workshop, storage, hobby room), all included in the controlled residential ventilation system, 10cm basement insulation, the hobby room has underfloor heating.
Due to water pressure, we want to do without all light shafts.
In the utility room and hobby room we can install normal windows, in storage and workshop no windows are planned.
Now the question arises for us:
The windows are very shallow - giving up the tilt/turn function would give us significantly more glass area. Would you replace the windows with fixed windows?

We took a small basement window without a large excavation. There is a small plastic shaft in front of the window that lets in correspondingly little light, but that was not important to us. It was not even a cost issue, but I just find those excavations where you can easily walk from outside up to the window simply stupid. A basement is a basement and not a panoramic living space.

I see it differently ... we have 2 rooms downstairs where it is exactly as you say, that you can go there without effort .... the 2 rooms are much brighter as a result and can be used as proper living space.

Rc2 windows installed that can be locked.
The remaining rooms have small basement windows in the shaft ... I regret that in hindsight ... because I saw at the neighbor's: almost normal windows in the light shaft and it is comparatively bright there, I could have used that in the laundry room ....

Light shafts have lift-off protection.

This is even grossly negligent. I can imagine that one might have to justify oneself in court if push comes to shove.
