if 200 years ago and 270 years ago the definition for strip foundations were similar, and I assume they were, they are not remotely comparable to the quality of today's strip foundations. From my experience I can say that my house has "settled" several decimeters deeper into the ground alone due to the federal road running close by. I also see the fears and concerns as justified. In a previous life I was somewhat involved in evidence preservation procedures (monitoring/reading water levels in boreholes installed in structures to be preserved as evidence) and I seem to remember that only "court-appointed" evidence preservers are money well spent ... Warning: layman's opinion because that was 35 years ago, I may remember poorly, be mistaken, or nowadays everything might just be different

Well, in the meantime, a certain Mr. Monier came up with the idea of using iron.

My experiences are only about 20 years old. But I can confirm that. An independent, reputable expert should also be sufficient. He is only court-appointed if one files a lawsuit against the building permit.
