Thank you for your answers.
My children have not placed anything in front of the pane (double glazed), I do not have internal blinds, so no heat buildup, no partial shading, and no glass insurance.
For over 40 years, the old wooden windows lasted without temperature fluctuations; they even survived the Lothar storm.
Could the cause with the new windows be improper installation, manufacturer defects, etc.?
Will the outer glass pane also break soon, possibly when I am at work or on vacation, or during the next major storm?

Hello everyone,

We also had a thermal crack on an almost 2m large fixed glazing.

We built with a general contractor. Are glass issues also included in the 5-year warranty or am I out of luck in this specific case?

Does anyone have experience with glass breakage, warranty, and general contractors?

Thank you very much

You wrote fixed mounted panoramic window. Then in my opinion it is also quite possible that the glass pane was under tension because the frame was not installed correctly (not square, skewed).

Possible stress crack caused by loads transferred from above via the frame (and glass)? (i.e. incorrect installation/dimensions)

I have personal experience with such a crack in the glass – but it was not resolved through a general contractor/glazier (since they went bankrupt). For me, it was handled via household insurance (glass breakage included). Maybe an alternative.

Otherwise, in my opinion, it will be difficult to have these issues covered under warranty since you first have to prove a stress crack (incorrect installation, too much load) as opposed to a thermal crack ("there was probably something standing in front of it!"). At least, that is how I would approach it as a general contractor.

I can only report that exactly the same thing happened to us, but in a small, triple-glazed window sash - and shortly after installation. Two days after installation, a crack appeared "out of nowhere," without anything being placed against it or exposed to excessive heat. A report to the window manufacturer resulted in an immediate replacement of the glass by them. Apparently a material defect, which can certainly happen. Whether this helps now, I don't know; it depends on the insight and goodwill of the contractor. Like with mold in a rental apartment: The landlord knows about the thermal bridge - or just blames it on improper ventilation. Both are difficult to prove, and the latter is initially easier to avoid responsibility.
