You have to live with standing in full spotlight at night on the way to the bathroom and back to bed. We solved this with orientation lights with motion detector and night sensor; on the way to the bathroom and back, three of them turn on and you don’t stub your toe.

Use presence detectors and not motion detectors. Sensitivity can be set so that pets are not a problem. Unless they are alpacas. Detectors in walkways, etc. are very convenient. It probably does not save much.

Sounds good! How much does something like that cost? Which manufacturers are recommended here?

I also wish the thing had an additional switch. Then I could quickly take out the trash in the evening without attracting all the insects with the light.

Everything is doable. The question is how much effort it takes... For example, that at night on the way to the toilet, it is only dimmed to 10%. If you want it bright, you give a voice command or press a switch.

I thought the OP wanted to save... So far, there are only many (really good) tips, but all of them are significantly more expensive than plain switches.
