At my parents' 30-year-old KS terraced house without roller shutters but with internal shading, it is very pleasantly cool (that's where we fled to). They are also very careful that the door is only open briefly and that airing only takes place at night (unlike our apartment, the air is not even stuffy). Also, the warm air obediently rises into the attic... it's good that it's dark there because the windows are not overly abundant - but there's always something :D
I believe everything has already been said: 1. Lack is a very abstruse idea 2. Shade 3. Air at night 4. Convince children to play either inside OR outside 5. Next time, build in mass – although it doesn’t help if it’s hot for 2 weeks and points 1 to 4 are ignored, supported by enormous inertia and phase shift, but still. 6. Stop whining (otherwise everyone always complains that there is no summer) and, in the final consequence, do your part against climate change ;) (The airflow when cycling can be very pleasant)
