So it's not about his drinking pleasure but his tolerance to moisture. For our purpose of draining the lawn so that no swamp forms, the drainage system is perfect.

I do not know of any plant that tolerates waterlogging. Even the thirsty ones don't like it. This includes, for example, bamboo.

I would dig the planting hole deeper and create a natural drainage with a mixture of sand and stones before planting the plant.

What comes to mind: during the construction phase, we were able to loosen the compacted soil a bit by sowing fertilizer plants. Lupines have taproots :)

Mobile greetings from on the go

Hello

I also have clayey soil. For the trees, I replaced it to a depth of over 150cm with a mixture of sand, potting soil, and topsoil. It’s done in half a Saturday.
Additionally, I buried a 120cm concrete drain pipe with the opening facing upwards flush with the ground. Smoothed the groove with repair cement. It is a perfect watering ring.

Actually, all marsh plants and those that grow directly by bodies of water do. Among trees, alder, ash, poplar, and willow are generally tolerant of waterlogging. Hazel, elderberry, and bird cherry should also be possible. And of course birches. (You may need to find the right variety for each case --> nursery).

It is possible that the soil here is not "naturally" moist, but has been altered due to construction activities. There are ways to recultivate the soil. As a keyword (search term), "injection technology" might help. Landscaping companies and nurseries may be able to provide assistance.

It's a pity that the planted trees then die. I would take a soil sample to have an analysis done to be absolutely sure that it is not due to the soil. If it really was caused by waterlogging, only one option remains for me: soil improvement. The planting hole should not be chosen too small. Mix clayey soil with sand and topsoil, and then plant the tree (alder, ash, poplar, and willow). Then a replanting should also work. Regards Laura
