Just a question to the group, I personally find surface-mounted spots a good alternative to recessed spots. There are many different variants here, can someone recommend some for the hallway and [Küche]?

Isn't it like with the folding rule and the centimeter ruler? My boss in my first apprenticeship always drilled into me "there is no folding rule in the German tool assortment, there are only centimeter rulers or folding rulers," but unfortunately no customer ever understood me when I used that word. And while we're at it. Is it a screwdriver or a screw driver? Or a caliper or a vernier caliper? My boss was very strict about it and insisted. No customer understood me.

No, that's not how it is. Please read my previous posts here again. "Spot" and "Einbaustrahler" are not synonyms, unlike the supposed analogies you mentioned.

I find the examples quite good. Zollstock is not a synonym but incorrect, as nowadays no Zoll measurement is included. However, it is commonly used in everyday language and very few know the actually correct words. But we are getting off topic.

After all, Zollstock still means a measuring instrument for lengths/distances, whereas Spot has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the design (built-in, surface-mounted, pendant, etc.). That just seems to be somehow hard to understand.

Spot also means dot or stain. I find that not inappropriate for the light spots on the ceiling.
