Dear community,

I kindly need your valued help/ideas for a fall protection for my light wells (ground floor plan attached). The light wells are very wide (2.5m and 4.2m) and each one meter deep. The fall protection is necessary because the light well goes 1.2m deep.

The usual solutions from the internet with grating with 2.5cm thickness and 33mm/66mm mesh size I do not find ideal because I fear that too much light will be lost. A railing is also not an option for us because we do not like the look.

Does anyone have a clever solution on how to ensure on the one hand that no child falls into the light well but on the other hand only little light is lost through the fall protection grating for the office and guest room in the basement?

Many greetings!

Well, I don't think there's much more to it. A railing would be the easiest, probably stainless steel with wire cables. It doesn't block your light. If you don't like that, then glass. That just gets more expensive.

How much space do you have in front of the light wells? If it only goes down 1.20 meters, then extend further out, make a step with a second row of L-shaped stones, then it only goes down 2x0.6m. Then you don't need anything.

The light well is already installed and unfortunately I couldn’t make any steps because otherwise I wouldn’t be able to get around the house (the property is relatively small). I have only found the following picture, which I would like. Can someone tell me what would be needed for this and whether it is child-safe? Best regards

As an alternative, without knowing exactly whether there aren't clear disadvantages as well. How about laminated safety glass? You would of course have to come up with some kind of support, but if you do it appropriately, it is walkable and lets through as much light as possible.

The version in the picture is probably not really child-safe, as you can easily slip your foot through. An alternative could also be a double rod mat element that you then adjust accordingly!?

Well, is that nice in the picture? You'll just have to go to a locksmith. If I were you, I'd do that anyway and ask what other ideas he has. Custom-made items have to be that anyway.

And as I already wrote, then made of glass, walkable, but it's certainly very expensive.

I would really consider rather making something with wire rope as a railing instead.

The locksmith has to say. Child-safe only means that no one can fall in. No doctor, however, would like to treat the bone fractures when a leg gets caught between the bars. Otherwise, I would say it's the ugly prison model "Alcatraz". Child-safe is only a complete cover. Children especially like to climb over ropes, fences, and especially walls. Balancing on the wall - great game. Put up a small and cheap picket fence for 1-3 year olds and teach the children not to enter the light well. That should bring more than all the elaborate and expensive measures. Experience of a father of three
