Stylish solution for ceiling light without tearing everything up: Replace a switch with a porcelain surface-mounted switch and run a nice cable with porcelain holders up to the ceiling, along the ceiling to the lighting point, and connect a lamp. Gi Gambarelli offers this, e.g. the White-Italy series. Can be googled, Italian site with moderate German translation but also with good pictures.
Possibly, the power can also be run from an adjacent room (technical room) and made switchable or activated with a motion detector.
