I would find it really great to hardly have to operate any light switches in the house anymore and to have "soft" lighting. In other words: there are motion or presence detectors (infrared?) in the room, and as soon as someone is nearby, the light is gently dimmed up. As soon as no one is in the room anymore (+ about 1 minute), the light is gently dimmed down.

In the USA (120V) there is a switch called "Lutron Maestro LED Dimmer Switch with motion Sensor" for this. It can do all that, and even remembers the last set dimming level. Does anyone know something similar for the European power grid that doesn’t cost a fortune?

I have already considered building it myself using Arduino & co, but especially dimming LEDs at 240V is not exactly simple.

Addendum: In this direction go, for example, so-called automatic switches like the "Peha Automatic Switch D 891-2 AS O.A.". However, in my opinion, they cannot be switched manually on demand, and it is a pure motion detector (i.e., it turns off when you do not move while reading on the couch).

Works with Philips Hue, Z-Z-Wave and other similar systems.

Thank you for the tip. I took a close look at Philips Hue last night. It has a few too many features, and I am therefore limited to Philips Hue bulbs. For me, it’s solely about the touchless dimming effect; I don’t need anything else like colored lights, schedules, etc. Also, I would rather not have to replace all of my existing bulbs, which are already dimmable LEDs and weren’t cheap. Hence the solution via the switch. Is Z-Wave (or another solution) more effective here, or do all these systems pursue the same approach?

Philips Hue is an end product.

Z-Z-Wave is a wireless standard.

So two different things. With Z-Z-Wave devices you could dim your existing bulbs when presence is detected. However, you then need:

Dimmer
Presence detector
Programming interface(Z-Z-Wave stick)
