My children went to their schools exactly there. For example, in Mosbach, I believe there are four grammar schools, one of them even purely English-speaking, and also the dual university, etc. They traveled by bus from our little village on the Neckar. That was totally easy! I went in the other direction to HD, S-Bahn every 30 minutes, station reachable by bike or on foot. From Eberbach there was even an S-Bahn every 2 hours that went nonstop to Heidelberg central station in 18 minutes!!! Colleagues of mine lived in a district of HD and took longer :D. Both cities have hospitals, all kinds of doctors, countless sports clubs, and much more. I believe that you have to deal with it thoroughly and individually in relation to your own life and also search specifically for ways, then you might find something you hadn’t suspected before. Often, however, people are dismissive about this from the start. The Odenwald is even cheaper because the towns there often really have a problem with local supply or, for example, schools.
Of course, you have to be able to afford this deal breaker. I have driven it the same way for over 30 years, although most of the time I used the aforementioned train, whose frequency is simply fabulous. Since I was often on the road there professionally, I know that it takes just as long or longer in the other direction, but somehow the "east" has always been somewhat frowned upon here. Completely incomprehensible to me because except for the Bergstraße, I find the surroundings of HD rather less beautiful, because everything is flat. Just when I drive through the expensive "SAP region" in the greater Walldorf area or Rhine valley, in my opinion it’s the opposite of scenic. But....... that is gladly accepted.......To the east, you just have to drive very long by car along the Neckar, which is a deal breaker for many commuters.
