One of my best friends has been automating houses since his school days, with residents of all ages and educational backgrounds. We would always design such a system independently of philosophy, i.e., wired in a star topology and not saving on wires; and instead of switches, better to use push buttons: switches have detent positions and can thereby be in conflict/contradiction with the centrally controlled state. For an operation that is also pleasant for technically averse co-users (compatibility with grandma-in-law), the control elements should be one-dimensional: on/off or more/less, but no more than binary in the number of possibilities, and also with clear assignment (so not the light push button double-clicked then responsible for the blinds).

If you're talking about the simple ones in conventional appearance, which 11ant apparently describes.

I have 5 different types from 4 manufacturers in my house, all of which perfectly fulfill their tasks. However, for example, the detector from the WC or entrance area would not deliver any satisfactory results in the kitchen at all.
