The general approach for building controls. Conventional switches are a dead end and will remain so despite attempts to connect something supposedly smart in front of or behind them.

Have you already been able to gain a lot of experience with push buttons? Can you recommend something?

Every system has its own designs and variants. If you are referring to the simple ones in conventional design, which 11ant apparently describes. These are available from various common manufacturers, e.g., from JUNG. These are also available with two functions. This is then called a push button with a center position.

In terms of mother-in-law compatibility, 11ant naturally means such buttons that appear as familiar as possible to the unsuspecting user, i.e., under no circumstances look different from the "switches people used to have back then." The intelligence of these things is supposed to remain a secret visually.

Which PM do you use in the WC? I have installed an MDT SCN-P360E3.03 in the WC. It basically works well but has problems detecting presence with little movement ("longer sitting"). In other words, the light goes off after the follow-up time. Of course, I could increase that, but it would be better if the PM detected it more reliably.
