Hello, I wanted to install a Sonos 5.1 system in our new building using a Sonos amp (available), an existing subwoofer, two Sonos One (available) for the front and two Sonos One as ceiling speakers (rear) above the couch (free-standing in the room). Now I don't like this view in the [BETON] ceiling with 2 network sockets, 2 power sockets and the 2 ceiling mounts sooooo much. Therefore, I am now thinking of installing the passive Sonos architectural/ceiling/speakers. The concrete ceiling is 20 cm thick plus plaster. I think it will not be possible now to make a 13 cm deep and 21 cm wide hole in the ceiling to completely recess the box in the ceiling. Are there any mounting frames so that the boxes still stick out a bit or something like that? Or any other ideas on how to solve this? Or other speakers? Best regards Ben

For a 5.1 system, it is complete nonsense to put the speakers in the ceiling. You need ceiling speakers, for example, for Atmos.

Just google 5.1 setup, then you’ll know where the rear speakers belong. Oh yes, by the way, you also need a center speaker for 5.1 – you forgot that in your setup.

Yes, that's correct with the center, but that doesn't exist like that in the Sonos system... And where are the rear speakers supposed to go if there is no shelving unit or similar behind the couch? Speakers on stands are also not an optimal solution (visually).

Then the system is already crap. Well, that's the problem with normal living rooms. They're just terrible for the cinema feeling. If the couch is directly against the wall, I would probably try dipoles. Otherwise, try a bit and hang the rears on the wall – you want to do it with Sonos, after all. As I said, there are plenty of tips for such situations on the web, even for difficult rooms.

is quite right with his tips. I also wouldn’t install ceiling speakers, although they wouldn’t be quite as bad as rears in a home theater as they would be as fronts. But then install them well behind the seating position.

By the way, you should also be able to designate the Sonos One as a center. Sonos wouldn’t be my favorite, but their software is pretty good. I don’t think the hardware is great (e.g., no Bluetooth), but the Play 5 does a lot right in terms of sound.

Upload your floor plan here, then I can show you the options. I work in the industry, was in customer consulting for years.

Maybe you can lower the ceiling a bit in that area? With a stylish LED strip all around, it looks very good.
