We built the wall first, then continued to fill and compact.

Did you fill the wall from the back with concrete. Or just put in gravel and compacted it?

The wall by the planting strips is virtually free-standing. If the stones didn’t fit at all, some mortar was put underneath. It was then backfilled with soil. The first row is also laid thinly in mortar.
