Basically everything that then goes in the direction of firewalling, such as selective forwarding, manipulation of ports, and in any case everything that requires more complex handling like NAT for certain protocols, multicast, etc. Of course, this does NOT have to occur in a typical home network, but since nowadays everyone thinks they have to deal with VLANs and differently prioritized packets, it should also be mentioned that typical advanced switches are not entirely suitable for that.

It depends less on the size and more on the complexity, and when I read about the heavy artillery that some entirely inexperienced hobby admins are deploying here, I wonder how anyone can juggle these things so boldly with so little knowledge. However, this may also be related to the fact that nowadays people are always led to believe that even the most complicated things can be easily learned with the right YouTube video. (But usually, relevant background knowledge is still missing.)
