Gypsum board ceiling hangs lower than expected - What to do?

Hello forum,

our drywall ceiling was recently installed on the upper floor (under the pitched roof) and unfortunately it now hangs unexpectedly low. It looked directly oppressive and I also noticed it because I could reach it without jumping.

So I measured: 244cm from the top edge of the screed.

If the floors and painter's fleece are added, it's probably only 242cm, which is somewhat disappointing.

So I looked at the plan again and it says: 250cm.
This also fits for the wall and the roof beams (I also measured).
On the ground floor it's also perfect (250cm), even despite the interior plaster on the ceiling.

So the ceiling hangs 6cm below the roof beams.

What else is installed between everything?
The panels themselves are only about 1.25cm thick, I think.
Is the counter battens that thick? (that would be about 4.75cm then).

Is this normal?

We are just a bit disappointed because we had expected 250cm. A 6cm difference is noticeable and we wonder why it was done this way.

By the way, there is insulation material between the horizontal roof beams, i.e. above the panels, but that is probably irrelevant.

Best regards

With us it is 2.35. But it doesn't really bother. The rooms on the upper floor are bright and cozy under the slant. The 10 cm are not exactly disappointing for us now, but surprising... we probably weren't paying attention. But I can't see a problem that you can't live with. I don't think 2.42 is negative either in that regard. We have 2.45 on the ground floor and just shrug our shoulders. How much does the lack of height bother you?

It doesn't burden us, it's just annoying when expectations are not met. My expectation was that the [OG] ceiling would be as high as in the [EG]. (According to the plan both are 2.50).

It is now like this: In the basement it is about 2.58, in the [EG] 2.50 and in the [OG] only 2.44. It would have been better to make the basement lower.

And the lower the ceiling, the more it presses from above. I prefer higher ceilings. If it were 6cm higher now, it would be less bad.

Yes well the die is cast. Nothing can be corrected anymore.

A lath has been added on top to get enough Spax screws in. Bam, there go your 6 cm. so what?

I would bother your site manager with that question. If I were supposed to have a clear room height of 250 cm from the top edge of the finished floor according to the plan, I would insist on that and not comfort myself with supposed structural necessities. I wouldn’t be surprised if it eventually turned out that some kind of botched work was the cause.

We recently had a case like that. For an extension, the roof was to be extended. At the transition between new and old, there was a kind of bulge in the verge cladding, which was allegedly due to the slightly changed roof pitch at the extension. As it turned out, the roofers had used a too short batten at that point, which they brilliantly extended with a nailed-on piece...
