Hello,

we also have a gas connection on our property that we can have connected for €2,000.

We are currently considering what is better. We want to build a single-family house with 130 sqm living space and a full basement as a KfW55 house. Also planned is a photovoltaic system intended for heating and general electricity consumption. We are a family of three (2 adults and 1 child).

No matter how we search, we really cannot find a comparable option to estimate the costs and benefits. What are your experiences, what is better, more effective, ultimately cheaper and more maintenance-friendly, a gas heating system or an air-to-water heat pump?

Thank you very much in advance.

Ultimately, you first have to get quotes; otherwise, this cannot be answered reliably. For me, the air-to-water heat pump was cheaper in terms of TCO. With the CO2 taxation, the price advantage of the gas heating will probably be marginalized in the variable costs. But that is pure speculation.

Regarding maintenance: My heat pump is basically maintenance-free. But I believe it depends on the refrigerant / manufacturer. Regarding lifespan: that is always the big point of contention. If properly designed and adjusted, you have a good chance of a long lifespan. It is also important that you as a user understand your system. A gas heating system is more forgiving of user-related "misbehavior."

You need gas anyway for the stove...

if you install gas, you probably still have to put solar thermal on the roof for kfw55 (there are other solutions, but this is standard). however, it can also be installed on the north side so that the south remains free for photovoltaic.

Gas is the cheap, simple solution that any fool can do.

if a fool installs a heat pump for you, you'll pay yourself dumb and dumber with the electricity. you MUST engage intensively during the construction phase and watch them closely.

general trend: the lower the heat demand, the more worthwhile a heat pump is.

As of 01.01.2020, BAFA has apparently changed the funding for heat pumps. Now 35% of the eligible costs are subsidized. I am missing the total costs of a gas + ST system to calculate this, but I believe this shifts the overall calculation significantly in favor of the heat pump. I hope I have not misinterpreted the funding conditions, but if this is correct, it could be the economic end of the gas heating system in new buildings.

Applies to new buildings only if an annual performance factor greater than 4.5 is achieved
