Hello everyone,

we are currently facing the difficult decision of choosing between gas or an air-to-water heat pump.

Our cost comparison:

Gas:
Cost of gas connection approx. €3000
Rebate from the construction company for the gas heating including solar thermal -€500
___________________________________________________________________
+€2500

Air-to-water heat pump:
would currently be included in our house price
If we decide on an air-to-water heat pump, the question would still be whether to install a photovoltaic system.
Cost of photovoltaic system: approx. €10,000

We would be very happy to receive responses and tips!

Hi,

I’m sorry – sometimes I’m straightforward.

This is not a cost comparison. This is apples, pears, and cucumbers all together.

1. Your house would be built with an air-to-water heat pump at no extra cost, as I understand it. Total Cost of Ownership is usually still somewhat higher compared to gas at the moment. But if the house is built properly, the air-to-water heat pump (good brand and sizing) is definitely an option.

I assume the air-to-water heat pump would be without a thermal solar system. Whether with or without heating support, these systems don’t really provide that much benefit.

2. You can independently arrange for a gas connection. In my technically biased view, gas is far from over. And the technology is still evolving. There will be interesting developments in the future. When you see all that, you usually choose to do without the gas connection if you install an air-to-water heat pump. Unless you want the gas connection, for example for a stove.

3. Photovoltaics have nothing to do with all this. It’s more like a green-thumb principle decision. With an air-to-water heat pump, you have chances to generate significant contributions for yourself. A little bit in winter for heating; about 6-8 months a year for hot water. I personally consider an air-to-water heat pump with thermal solar with photovoltaics to be grossly uneconomical.

Contrary to economic considerations, I currently also have photovoltaics being installed afterward. The green thumb...

Thermal solar is my pleasure, which was insanely expensive and brings nothing, and our gas heating is enormously inexpensive and efficient.

Best regards
Thorsten

There is nothing more to add for now. The information is simply too insufficient and the comparison is flawed.

Hello Haeule2016,

thank you for your question in the forum, however T21150 and EveundGerd are right, a qualified answer, apart from a few usual placeholders, is unfortunately not possible based on the information you have provided. Give us some input data and you will receive more concrete answers here on the web.

Important information is:

- is it a new building or is an existing property to be energetically renovated?
- is it a single-family house or a multi-family house, are there possibly commercial areas as well?
- is there already an energy standard that must be met, due to personal wishes or financing (KfW, state funds, etc.) e.g. KfW 40?
- who are the future users?
- is there already a specific budget for the heating part?
- location of the property?
- etc.

The more data you have, the more substantiated a statement is possible!

Just looking at the gas heating part, it may be that for an existing property the chimney renovation is missing in the calculation. Has the gas connection already been specifically requested? Maybe it is available at a reduced price when concluding a supply contract? Overall, the investment for a gas heating system will also be cheaper after a closer look at the individual factors. However, there are also factors that would exclude one or the other option. But numbers, data and facts are still missing here! Please provide, then it will become more concrete!

Best regards, Erik
