We are currently still in the town with about 40,000 inhabitants. I really like it because we quickly get to the countryside. The future building area still belongs to the town area but I would describe it as a village. We drove around a lot and looked at many things. However, pragmatism probably won in the end. In other words, the best possible, affordable option that is still acceptable for both of us and of course still available. The proximity to parents was also an argument in favor of the current building area.

Thought about it again. The most important thing for me was really that the commute is short. What good is a nice house if I’m sitting in it alone because my husband takes forever to get home? Our situation is also such that my work location will definitely not change, and for my husband, at least it’s an area in the city center where he will (90%) always work.

We both come from small towns near the highway in Saxony and Thuringia. When moving in together, we thought about where we wanted to live. My wife needed a larger company for her job, I was relatively flexible regarding changing jobs, so it was clear that we had to move somewhere near a bigger city. That actually meant many regions in Germany were possible options. We then consciously decided on the region around Dresden and first moved into a very remote house in the countryside, which was already in her family’s possession. Since we drove early in the morning and in the evening by car, there were no shops in the village, and we did not even have contact with neighbors outside our own property. Even though it might be idyllic, this remoteness was not for either of us, and later we would have had to drive our child everywhere. On the other hand, a big city would not have been our thing either. Since we also often drove on the highway to visit family, we searched for used properties in small towns near the highway around Dresden. Although we never wanted to build and also did not look for plots, by chance we became aware of a new, still unsold development area exactly in our desired region and immediately took the opportunity. That’s how we ended up building after all, even though we never wanted to build ourselves. Our child now has almost the same route to the daycare, kindergarten, elementary school, and secondary school or grammar school. Doctors and shops are all in town. There is also a regular bus connection to Dresden. What more could you want.

I would not create a pro/con list. Put together what is important to you both (and important for kids). The location that best covers your wishes wins. Hard factors like schools or shopping facilities, as well as soft facts like a healthy neighborhood, should be collected.

Yes, that's true.
At that time, however, we didn’t really perceive it that way; today I know that the most difficult thing when building is to secure a plot of land.

If I should make you a little jealous:
Since the construction site was not yet widely marketed, we had about 50 plots to choose from. And still at a price of around €90/m². Many here would say that can only be in the middle of nowhere, but the neighboring town is Dresden. I get to the city center faster than many Dresden residents.
In the meantime, land prices here in our town have increased by a factor of 2.5 after about 7 years.
