Hi,
Somehow, you have to be able to plan your life at least somewhat, right? That’s always been my problem, I think. Until my apprenticeship, I always had everything planned out in my life. And since that’s done, I’ve been feeling pretty aimless. I’m glad to be starting my studies. Maybe that will distract me from these plans.
Others have already said something about finances, so I’ll keep my mouth shut there, but:
No, you cannot completely plan your life. And you shouldn’t even try to, especially not at your age. That would be super boring! You are very young; in your position, I would first try to advance professionally, build up some capital, but also think about what you really want.
You also seem to be planning to retire one day at this company. Keep in mind that the comfortable times of our parents’ generation, when a permanent job basically promised security, are simply over! Today your company, your job could be gone overnight. NEVER rely on your company, no matter how good your standing may seem right now. (I had to experience this myself at a place like Siemens. People like to say those are civil servant positions. Think again, sometimes it’s decided overnight to outsource a division and that’s it....)
So don’t cling to just one life plan, change companies, move to different areas, broaden your horizons! And honestly, having a property holding you back is very hindering!
For me, 21 years old would have been way too young to make a decision about where and how you really want to spend your life.
Good luck,
Andreas
