Hello everyone,

We are currently in the construction planning phase of our house and have the following question: planned in the living/dining area is a concrete wall approximately 2m wide, 0.35m deep, and 8.5m high. Adjacent to this is our staircase to the [og]. The idea was to execute both elements in exposed concrete. Visually, we prefer a plastering, since the rustic look of genuine exposed concrete is not quite our taste and this variant is more expensive. However, plastering the staircase is probably rather difficult to realize. The exposed concrete wall and staircase should look exactly the same.

Now the question arises what would make the most sense considering costs and design aspects?

Also, the idea was to integrate a surface heating system into the exposed concrete wall for heating/cooling. From your perspective, is this technically/design-wise/cost-wise reasonable?

Thank you very much for your help.

Best regards Andreas

I would like to help, but I don’t quite understand the question yet. You write that you want exposed concrete, but you don’t like the look? Is there a plan? I would like to help but please provide more information....

Thank you for the response. It is quite simple. Under the premise of the same appearance for the concrete wall and stairs and as cost-effective as possible: exposed concrete or normal concrete execution and then plastering. From my point of view, everything speaks in favor of plastering, I just don't know if it works with the stairs (wear and tear).

That works, it will be sealed. Beton Cire is more expensive than exposed concrete in my experience and is basically fake. But tastes differ

Thank you for your assessment. I will obtain 2 quotes from the shell construction contractor and compare the prices, I am curious. Regarding the appearance, there are certainly very beautiful real concrete options, I also need to have that shown to me.

Have you made any progress with your decision? I am also considering making the staircase a visible concrete staircase, but since you can't always say exactly how it will look in the end, I have also thought about a coating made of microcement or something like that. But that will probably be more expensive again than just putting tiles on it, right? At least that's what I was told when I was thinking about not covering the floor but having the screed ground down...
