A downward extractor can never be as good (considering all aspects, including volume, etc.) as a hood. You simply cannot outsmart physics ...

Physics aside. Ours works perfectly. Surely a hood would be even better and the motor can also be installed outside the house..BUT the appearance above a cooking island is just very poor.

Alternatively, there is also a retractable table ventilation such as [e.g. von Gaggenau]. Both exhaust air and recirculation air are possible.

Provided the hood hangs low enough. As soon as the hood is mounted a bit higher, it looks completely different again...

When thinking about "physics," don't just consider the thermals of the warm exhaust air rising. It's also about the particles (such as water droplets, grease droplets, etc.) that are naturally heavier than air. The Earth prefers to pull the particles downward anyway. If you obstruct the rising air column somewhat with the downdraft extractor, you are not outsmarting physics; no, you are merely making the Earth's gravity's job easier... pulling everything downward. That is why these things work so well.

Regardless of the extraction performance, these systems take up a considerable amount of space in the base cabinet. Does your kitchen allow for that? With recirculation, I would also find the combination of extracted, moist-warm-residual-grease air and base cabinet dreadful. Aaaand: I once cooked on something like that and had to turn it off when seasoning because otherwise it sucked away the spices. But I guess you get used to that over time. The extractor in the middle would also bother me because it interrupts the cooktop (and I'm not sure if all the pots and pans I use still fit on it. And I often use the cooktop as a baking sheet resting area, which wouldn’t work well anymore).
