Hey, we are currently building and have now dealt with the connections. We wanted to have TV / internet sockets installed in the 3 upper rooms after all. On the ground floor, we have data sockets in the living room and the office.

Now the electrical installation company asked us if we would want a media distributor since it would be recommended given the "number" of data sockets.

Now my question is, what does such a distributor do for me?

What do you mean by Medienverteiler? Does your electrician mean a Hager multimedia distributor?

There are actually 3 possibilities. The Hager distributor, a network cabinet in 10" or 19", or you simply nail patch panels, routers, ... to the wall. For me, the whole thing depends a bit on the size of the installation. How many ports on the patch panel are we talking about? To the mentioned outlets, there will still be connections for access points, possibly garage, ...

I personally always prefer a network cabinet with a patch panel in keystone technology and no TV in the cabinet. The most important thing is that there is enough space for devices and cables.

What do the electrician and you understand by a "Medienverteiler"?

Somewhere the cables come together, and that's where a network cabinet or whatever belongs.

He probably means a multimedia panel in the distribution box, i.e. nothing other than a patch panel in a very inconvenient position.

Well, depending on the demands placed on the installation, I don't find that objectionable. Even a 10" cabinet with only a few height units already protrudes a lot into the room and can be extremely disruptive.

Anyway, a small switch has to go somewhere. I counted 5 rooms with network connections; the four built-in ports of the FritzBox are no longer sufficient as the simplest solution. The technology for all the TV connections also has to converge somewhere.

: Have the electrician explain the options to you in detail and choose the concept that makes the most sense to you. Only you can know whether a clean standard solution (probably the electrician's solution) is enough for you, or if you want to operate elaborate switches, servers, NAS, and whatnot. But I rather don't think so.

The problem is that if there is a Fritzbox inside, you can't use the wifi (all metal around). Be sure to plan additional APs.
