Do you have ideas for our staircase?

Hello everyone!

We are currently renovating a 60-year-old single-family house (with the help of an architect/designer). Everything is being brought up to date and some things are being changed.

Our problem right now is the staircase (see photo). It consists of stone slabs, which we don't like at all or are simply old. Our architect suggested the possibility of a coating; we visited a showroom today, but it didn't really appeal to us either (no wood look, everything very clean and more reminiscent of offices or businesses). Our idea was actually a wooden staircase (meaning wooden railings and also the stairs themselves). If the stone slabs are removed, everything will need to be leveled and repaired before wooden panels can be installed on top, which I assume will cost a lot.

Does anyone have any other ideas? I look forward to any response

well, since the wardrobe probably comes sometime after the stairs, many street shoes will be going up and down there. Therefore, I would make sure that it is something "easy to maintain." Wood is not really suitable for that. What look or style direction does the rest of the house have? Rather rustic-cozy or modern-minimalistic etc.?

In my opinion, this is again a case where the effectiveness and value of what exists is underestimated. From here, it looks mostly like granite. I find the walls more in need of improvement; I would probably only clean the floor. But if you don’t like it: What can you afford?

Yes, that’s true as well. You go up this half-floor with shoes on before you get to the wardrobe.
The rest is also rather wood-heavy and cozy. I was thinking possibly of wood-look tiles? Can you put those over the stone? The stairwell then goes up 2 more floors, but we wouldn't want something "cold" there.

Yes, the walls currently visible here have scraped-off wallpaper, so they will still be renovated anyway. I find the stone looks cold and rather uninviting, which we actually wanted to change. I didn’t think of tearing it down either, but maybe there are similar ideas like coatings that we just don’t know about yet.

That would certainly look very much like trying too hard and failing. Take out the stones and replace them with boards, cover the riser depending on taste with wood or white paneling. Doesn't cost a fortune now, even less with EL.
