Do not plaster any room in the attic

Hello everyone,

a small room was built above our bedroom in the attic.

Rafter insulation with Thermoflock. The other part of the attic was divided by a wall and there the floor ceiling is insulated.

On the wall (room division) and on the slopes, drywall boards are screwed and plastered.

Now the window was replaced and I wanted to devote myself to the gable wall.

I first roughly knocked off the old plaster around the window and primed it.

Now I am considering which plaster to use best.

Rotband or something lime-based? The room will later be used as a bedroom. The wall surface is about 8 sqm.

I did not want to use drywall boards because I would like to plaster a wall myself sometime.

The wall as well as the roof were and are dry.

Normally a gypsum plaster should be enough, right? I am only worried about condensation water that might collect on the walls since the window was now completely sealed.

The air can only circulate downwards.

So to sum it up:

- converted attic
- bedroom
- gable wall
- gypsum plaster (Rotband) or lime cement plaster?

P.S. Is it normal that all the bricks on the gable are laid crisscross? I have to compensate quite a bit with my nonexistent plastering skills to get the wall straight.

Best regards

Jan

What do you mean by that?

It is normal that where the wall must follow the upper edge of the roof slope, the brick bonding is "ticked" a bit differently than in the wall ending straight; and also that small-format bricks have to be used where otherwise the wall is mainly built with large-format bricks.

It is also normal that the appearance (evenness of the surface) in non-visible masonry in places where no living spaces are planned (also basement or garages) is less strictly judged—because it saves time.

Two or three millimeters of wall surface unevenness between adjacent bricks are more common in places where normally no one will look.

Sloppiness is not usual, nor would imaginative bonding patterns made from colorful scraps be acceptable.

Exactly, there is about a 4-5 mm offset. At the top of the gable, where it tapers to a point, it was somewhat roughly done and compensated with plaster.

The attic was also never used for living in the past.

That is a tricky corner anyway, where precision would cost time that is then considered unnecessary. It is almost common not to be so exact there.

Yes, that’s not so disturbing either. I could have glued drywall there, but as I said, I wanted to plaster a wall for once.

My wife says I should rather practice where only we will see it later.

You could also use Rotband to even out this 5 mm offset?

Smart women don't hurt

No idea, I tend to say "yes". Bausatzco has a YouTube video on this "Smooth walls -- goodbye flaws with Rotband". After watching it, I think you're right with the product.

Where there really are 5 mm, I would consider carefully breaking the edges a bit with a hammer, or first putting in mesh there. Otherwise, after drying, crack patterns might think they are "prepared" for that.
