Hi,
I have been thinking for years about how to design my house problem area.
I have a long narrow strip facing the public path that I would like to plant. The strip is about 75 cm wide and 10.5 meters long. The strip is located on the south side and gets full sun. Two gardens away, the neighbor has cut down all the tall and old trees, which means for us that since this year the house is completely in the sun. We definitely want some protection so that the ground does not heat up excessively and maybe something that will protect our facade from the full sun in the future, at least at the bottom.
Trees are probably not an option due to the limited space.
I like it when the plants are useful for wildlife all year round.
The fence must stay because otherwise it becomes a dog toilet. Even now with the stones. The privacy screen on the fence is more of a splash guard, as the whole thing is on an unpaved path, which is actually a dead end but apparently everyone has a key to lower the bollards and the footpath is often used, and not slowly. A disaster when it rains.
So, bring on the suggestions.

A hedge would be suitable. Thuja, privet, etc.

I do not want a thuja. I already have that as a boundary in the rest of the garden. I also don’t want it to be dark in front of the windows now. I was thinking more of something that also blooms and provides food and shelter for animals.

There might have been a trellis of trees. I have no experience.

I would use larkspur, blazing stars, mullein as tall plants accompanied by thyme, sage, irises. Ground cover like houseleek hellebores, tulips, daffodils, autumn asters to have flowers for about 10 months of the year.

The only thing you won’t get is shade. Rambling roses and black-eyed Susans do not work – tried myself.

Clematis might work and shade the house wall in summer.

Maybe a wicker fence? They can be kept narrow by pruning, and the planting distance can be varied.

Thank you for the tip. Do bushes like [Felsenbirne] work, etc? This strip is driving me crazy because you can't do anything with it. We had tried to buy something from the public path, but it was unfortunately refused.
