I am right in the middle of garden design. Directly on one side of the terrace, I want to create a small rock garden. Maybe some of you have a rock garden and can give me a few tips. Since I have no experience with such things at all, but find a rock garden really beautiful, you would really be helping me. Thank you! :)

HI!

A rock garden is truly a eye-catcher in any garden. It is important that you plan it carefully and choose the right location. It would be good if the place where you want to create the rock garden is slightly sloping, about 10°. The terrain should be facing south. A rock garden needs a lot of sun! However, if it is in the shade for about 2-3 hours a day, that would be optimal. Otherwise, the soil becomes too hot. You can also pile up an artificial hill. The subsoil must be well-draining, if necessary a drainage layer can be installed.

To enclose the rock garden, border stones are used. The types of rock suitable for this are diverse. For example, you can use sandstone, granite or slate. Limestone is not suitable if you use plants that are intolerant to lime. Regional rock types are best suited.

Best regards, landscaping :)

Hi!

I also find rock gardens particularly beautiful. Could you perhaps describe in more detail how to proceed? And what I would also be interested in: which plants are best suited for it? Is it also possible to create a herb rock garden? I think that would be especially good... because you could combine something useful with "design".

Best regards,
sennor :)

Hi!

An herb rock garden... that is really a good idea! It definitely looks very attractive. So I think that especially herbs, like [e.g. rosemary or sage or lavender], thrive particularly well in a rock garden.

Best regards, Mara ;)

Hi, you have great tips in store. Thank you! So the basic conditions are probably almost optimal for us. I want to create the rock garden next to the terrace. It is sunny there almost all day and it is slightly sloping as well. I think the idea of the herb rock garden is great. You combine something beautiful with something useful right away. Has anyone already tried something like that and created an herb rock garden themselves? Best regards! :) Janni

Hi!

You are right. An herb rock garden is really pleasing to the eye and also useful, as you can enrich the kitchen with the herbs. But you can also combine herbs with other plants that, for example, have beautiful flowers, which makes the whole thing even more interesting.

The location where you want to create the rock garden seems perfect. Now you just have to get to work and you will see, it really isn’t that much effort. The soil should be a good mix of clay, sand, and compost. The mixing ratio should depend on the plants chosen.

Stones: Large natural stones are best, arranged irregularly according to your own imagination. The planting is done between the stones.

The following flowers are well suited:
[Herbstzeitlose], [Krokusse], [Märzenbecher], [Schneeglöckchen], [Wildtulpen] or [Blausternchen].

Best regards,
[Gartengestaltung] :)
