We had the washbasin for 2 years in the first house and I agree with you, they are more demanding to maintain. We actually always had a small cloth and always wiped off splashes immediately, since the surface underneath was also solid wood. That is of course not the easiest life and requires a certain discipline, especially with kids. We also thought about it for a long time beforehand, but then, inspired by Marie Kondo, said: "it sparks joy" - things that bring me joy in everyday life, I gladly take care of. And so I decided for the new house that I would rather have my joy basin again, even if I have to keep it clean with more effort. =)
In the house as a whole, however, we tried to find a healthy mix of joy-bringing and low-maintenance materials. If I had made such decisions throughout the whole house, it would become too much effort for me in everyday life.
