Hi,

I will bring this topic back to life. I informed our builder that we intend to record the construction with a time-lapse camera. From his side, everything is relaxed; he also passes it on to his crew like that. I think if you mention it, it’s rather uncritical than if you keep it secret. Otherwise, you make yourself "suspicious" about the intention behind doing something like this.

I just think it’s cool when you watch time-lapse videos on the internet. As a keepsake for later, I definitely think it’s great.

For the recording, I got us a Brinno TLC200 f1.2. I will place it at the neighbor’s and record the construction from there. On Sunday, we will check if it’s sufficient to place the camera on the opposite windowsill or if it must go on the roof. Outdoor mounts and an outdoor housing are included.

Some calculation skill is required to figure out how often a picture should be taken. I actually don’t want the video to be longer than 10 minutes in the end. That would be boring. At 30 frames/second (for the video) and a construction period of 6-8 months, where work should only be done between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm daily, it should be enough to take a picture every 5 to 6 minutes....

I’m really curious how that will turn out...

I guess you calculated with 7 months, 5 working days and 12 hours. Then I at least come to 5-6 minutes. But in our case, something is happening every Saturday in the construction area, and maybe own contributions are also made on Sundays. So if you don’t want to miss anything, then include the weekend as well and rather aim for 10 minutes.

Had planned that at the time as well and gave up due to lack of power supply. Basically, it works with any crappy smartphone (the app is called Timelaps). But everything has to be weatherproof and permanently powered ... Otherwise it works with different cams ... the question arises about the "value" in case of theft or similar.

Hello Musketeer,

not quite right or rather we thought about it a bit differently... we asked the construction manager by when at the latest there are no more construction activities outside the house. In other words, when the roof is covered, windows are installed and everything is finished, then it basically continues only inside... That’s why we calculated 3 months of earthworks from the start. We record every day from 6:00 am to 6:30 pm, one photo every 3 minutes. That makes (12.5 x 60 min) : 3 = 250 pictures per day.

The camera converts the recordings directly into a video in avi format and plays the video at a frame rate of 30 frames per second. That means each day lasts about 8-9 seconds in the video. In 3 months that would be 3 x 30 days = 90 days, 90 days x 9 seconds = 810 seconds.

Thus, the video lasts about 13.5 minutes. I will then cut out the weekends and the phases where nothing happens and hope to get the raw construction down to 8-9 minutes…

For the interior work, I would then like to create another video.

Hi,
This is a good idea with GoPro and I had already searched online, but didn’t find the right one. It’s simply nice when later the photos of the construction processes are shown and the children are amazed.

But I still find the GoPro a bit expensive for that.
