Hello, today the bricklayers started with the cladding at our place and we discussed some details. For us, it was clear that the window sills should be clad with bricks. However, the contractor strongly advised against it. He said the water might not drain properly and white streaks could quickly form underneath. Does anyone have experience with this?

We have all window sills as roll layers - this is more or less common here. The efflorescence comes from the mortar - normally the sealing under the roll layer is led to the outside (basically like a "slide" from the window under the roll layer to the edge of the brick), so it should be kept within limits.

That is correct - these streaks are salt efflorescences.

Properly and permanently sealing a roller shutter box against penetrating moisture (rain side) is not easy. I would also rather recommend a conventional exterior window sill.

Rhenish greetings

I wouldn't do it either - it's usually done wrong. Natural stone countertops are cheaper and look better

And if they already advise you against it, then they probably can't do it anyway

That is a hasty statement! I very much welcome that the original poster has come across a masonry company that understands its craft. A roller layer cannot be sealed permanently – even with the most careful execution; no barrier foil will help with that. Rhineland greetings

At my parents' place, even on the weather-exposed side, no efflorescence has been visible after almost 30 years.
