Hello everyone,
I came across this forum because I have a question regarding the drying of clay bricks.
Next to my house, there is an old wooden barn that I am renovating. Part of it will be a small wine cellar. The wine cellar has internal dimensions of about 2.3 x 1.8 m and was built with clinker bricks. The wine cellar has no window, only the entrance opening for the door that will be installed later, with an opening size of 180 cm x 80 cm.
The ceiling consists of old floorboards about 8 cm thick, and on top of that, we made a clay fill about 5 cm thick.
The floor of the wine cellar is a concrete slab, and on it, we have now laid clay bricks (30x15 cm) with a thickness of 8 cm.
Everything turned out really great, but now I am wondering about drying these clay bricks.
I cannot provide good ventilation since there are no windows, only the entrance opening for the door.
At the moment, we have placed a construction dryer at the entrance opening and have practically sealed the remaining opening with foil.
Is that okay? Could it be that the clay bricks dry too quickly and develop cracks? Should I rather leave out the construction dryer and just let the bricks dry on their own (but without ventilation)?
Many thanks in advance for your expert advice.
Best regards, graebsch
