Hi,

I'm currently thinking more seriously about buying a wood stove to heat the house in case of emergency. Placed in a good spot, like in the stairwell or similar, you can already get good heat into a small house.

If the price trend continues like this, fossil energy will soon be worth its weight in gold.

I would like to know what others who still heat with fossil fuels think about this. You can't get photovoltaic and solar quickly or without major investments, and electricity for heat pumps isn't getting cheaper either.

Firewood is always available somewhere for free, so I would use the summer to install a fireplace as a backup.

Best regards

Do you have a functioning chimney? Are you allowed to connect a stove at that location (distance to the neighbor 15 m to their windows or the chimney must be 1 m higher than their window top edge, Federal Immission Control Act). Maybe you would prefer to set up a fireplace that also brings you joy in the living room?

We have a heat pump and additionally a fireplace that is used every evening. For that, we have generally lowered the temperature in the house a bit. It was purchased because we love it and like to sit in the living room in the evening at 25 degrees, but nowadays we are happy to have it. And in an emergency, we could even heat exclusively with it.
Wood for free will probably no longer be available or will be rarer because many are coming up with the idea.

If it really comes to pass that the single-family house owner can no longer pay for electricity or heating, then firewood will be the new currency and certainly not available for free. If you have the possibility to install a fireplace, it is certainly not a bad idea.

I don't know where you live, but free firewood here causes conflicts with the forester, and if you burn waste wood from somewhere, there are troubles with the neighbors. Decent firewood is not free. If you don't buy it ready-made, wood heats three times over, by the way, that's real work.

And with the district chimney sweep. I also assume that private wood stoves will no longer be permitted in the near future, as they contribute significantly to environmental pollution.

The great advantage compared to heat pumps or gas from the public network is that you can store firewood. This was also possible in the past with the oil tank or even today with the liquefied gas tank in the garden. In the event of multi-day power outages in winter, a tiled stove is a good emergency option for heat pump owners. And don't come to me with photovoltaics and storage, most models do not work during power outages, and for heating during a dark frost period they would only make a significant contribution at best in a passive house.
