My expectation is rather that this is only the plan – and in reality, the front house will be liked well enough to remain a permanent home (and that a second house will still be built, but contrary to the current plans only when the children have left the nest).

P.S.: I personally (which of course is not a model case) have been living for eight years (and probably another two) in a district where I moved as planned, but originally only for three years. As long as one is not yet retired, changes of residence are decided not only in the private part of life planning. On the other hand, no one should be discouraged from making intentional decisions about their place of residence even during their working life. After all, plan and reality do sometimes coincide.

maybe in 7 years you’ll really say, man we bought and financed super cheaply and now we’ll stay in.

Perhaps the developer has also installed a copy of the Amber Room in the basement. Perhaps perhaps perhaps. Back to the facts. Today you know that a mid-terrace house does not meet your expectations. You are continuously searching for the dream plot to build a detached house. That will not stop even if you were to buy a mid-terrace house. You would even have equity to realize the construction. That is what you want today. So remain a tenant, keep saving, and be ready when the dream plot knocks.
