Hello dear ones,

since my parents are a bit hesitant to consult an expert and I don’t really have any knowledge on the subject either, I’m just going to ask you now, maybe someone knows something :)

So, my parents have been planning for some time to extend their house and put a sauna in this extension. Now, such a sauna has a significantly different kind of moisture exposure than a normal bathroom (warmer, of course) - how do you best handle the insulation so that the walls don’t mold from the inside?

I also tried to educate myself a bit via Google, but I really didn’t find an answer :( For the individual products like mortar, plaster, concrete, etc., it always says something about capillary water absorption/water absorption coefficient and something about water vapor – what that is, and whether a high or low value is positive or negative, I haven’t really understood yet.

In my logic, the exposure of moisture with air to a wall means that mold forms over time, but maybe it also goes in a totally different direction..

I also already mentioned this once at the hardware store, but the salesman looked at me as if I didn’t have all my screws loose..

Please, can someone explain this to me? :/

Hmm, I’m not an expert, but what exactly does heat have to do with moisture?

no, no, no.

The heating in the sauna itself does not release any moisture, where should it come from.

However, moisture can be introduced through a [Aufguss]. Also, one might be moving around with wet towels, wet hair, or even have a shower in the room.

In general, though, your question is correct, fresh air is indeed important in a sauna room. And the moisture (if it is introduced) must also be removed again.

The heat in the sauna (which is generated by the stove) is initially dry heat, the moisture comes, as already mentioned, either from the infusion or through sweating. How much moisture is generated by the infusion depends primarily on the users, and not everyone even wants infusions.

There is a lime-cement plaster for bathrooms. It is not so sensitive to moisture and would also be suitable for a sauna room.

For ventilation, I recommend a large window and possibly a decentralized exhaust system that pulls moisture out of the room and lets fresh air flow in. Whether with or without heat recovery is a matter of personal taste. After the sauna, I personally prefer cooler air. ;)

My dear sister has had a sauna in the basement for about 10 years, which is used (more or less) regularly. After the sauna session, cross-ventilation is done through the window (possibly including the basement exterior door). Ventilation systems were not really common around 2000 - so not installed. I am not aware that she has ever had problems with mold so far.
