We also had the idea of using a water-bearing wood stove (also pellet!) instead of a pellet boiler. The only and then decisive difference was – besides the possibility to choose a significantly lower kW output – that the BAFA subsidy for option 2 is only half (1400 euros) of that for the real boiler (2900 euros), because only the boiler’s buffer storage is also subsidized, but not the stove’s. Since the boiler itself then cost 2900 euros, so it was basically “free” through BAFA, and our budget for the renovation was really tight anyway, we went with the boiler.
In the end, however, the boiler is now in the same place as the stove before (in the middle of the house in the living area, since that’s where the chimney is). Doing it otherwise would have required huge effort, but the boiler looks quite decent, it basically only lacks the viewing window into the little fire. Otherwise, it’s no uglier than a standard radiator – which we consciously avoided and went for underfloor heating instead.
