Hello dear forum members,
I have 3 light wells on the non-weather side that were installed in front of the basement windows (simplest design, built in 1978, basement windows with metal grates).
These have a closed concrete bottom.
This may have been sufficient in the past - today, however, we in southern Lower Saxony are occasionally struck by heavier rains.
During the last heavy downpour, the rain was so intense that about 3 cm of water stood in these wells. They could not drain and so penetrated through the windows into the basement.
The damage was minor and the water could be prevented from further intrusion with a few towels, but it is of course still not nice.
My father-in-law told me that a slanted drilling could be made in the concrete at the garden-facing end. The water would then flow out of the well. The lawn area could then be dug up and about 30-40 cm deep gravel could be buried there. This would allow the water to infiltrate well.
My question now is: Is this sufficient or should I perhaps consider other solutions? There are, for example, acrylic glass covers for light wells.

Thank you for your feedback :)
