Hello everyone,

Slowly we are moving towards moving in. Since the terrace faces southwest, we can't do without an awning/sunshade.

- Would you cover the full width of the terrace with an awning or possibly leave out large windows where there are [Raffstores]?
- It is quite windy here... But we don't want a pergola awning, rather a cassette awning, so without posts... Does anyone have experience if the wind makes that annoying?
- Any other things to consider?

Thanks and regards Daniel

We had the same idea "just no posts," but at the same time it is very windy here. We decided on a 6x4m articulating arm awning and it was an absolute mistake! In heat and wind at the same time, we often have to retract the awning partially or completely and we sit there with nothing. For the new house, there will therefore be no more awning, but a louvered roof.

similar with us, no awning because of wind and no posts, now we have a sun sail about 5x5m, 2 thin posts 50mm, and the sun sail runs electrically on the cable car, stormproof up to 7, no bending forces on the house, only tension

Another point before you possibly buy hastily:
Our west-facing terrace is hardly usable in the evening because the sun is very low. A normal awning wouldn't have helped then, only one with an extendable valance.

Fortunately, we had a simple umbrella for the first years and then decided on an aluminum-glass roof with an under-roof and vertical awning.
The advantage is that in summer the under-roof awning is almost always outside, and the stones on the terrace and the living room behind it heat up significantly less.

Wind and large awning. Absolute no-go. Don't do it. You will have to replace it after a few years.

As others have already said, if awning or anything else, then definitely with a valance! We have that too and from late afternoon it is worth its weight in gold, our neighbors without it then sit in the sun. Sometimes we leave the awning with valance extended until late in the evening, then beyond high summer it doesn’t get chilly so quickly and you can sit outside longer.
